Effectiveness of the sixth form - (Grade 1 Outstanding)

  • The sixth form provides an outstanding quality of education. Students make excellent  progress and achieve examination results that are higher than those nationally. An increasing proportion of students also achieve higher grades.
  • Approximately 75% of students go on to university.
  • A number of key factors are behind the success of the sixth form.  These include the outstanding teaching and learning alongside the high quality individual academic guidance and support students receive.
  • Students really enjoy the ethos created by the sixth form.
  • Sixth form students are excellent role models for the rest of the school and are actively involved in the life of the school.
  • They are leaders of the house system, and act as mentors and teaching assistants.
  • Students regularly raise money for charity and this extends to visiting South Africa to work with disadvantaged young people.
  • Because of its success, increasing numbers stay on in the sixth form.
  • Students are offered a wide range of A and AS level courses and a limited range of vocational courses.
  • The leadership and management of the sixth form are outstanding and have brought about significant improvements in raising the achievements of students.
  • Sixth formers are encouraged to actively undertake roles as reading buddies and learning support assistants to support students in lower school

   

Sixth Form News

  • July 2009: 28 students and 3 staff enjoyed an exciting trip to South Africa  with a mixture of leisure and charity activities arranged. Students actively fundraised before they left and saw how their money was spent visiting charity projects. Students enjoyed a football match with Zulu's; game viewing to see the big '5' and also visited historic sites.
  • August 2009 : Year 13 students received excellent A level results and achieved an average UCAS points score of 340 points. This is above last year's best ever score of 325 UCAS points per student. This is equivalent to students on average achieving over two A grades and one B grade at A level.
  • September 2009 a number of exciting initiatives are on offer to Sixth Form students .   On Wednesday afternoon there are no lessons and a full and varied enrichment programme is offered, including:   Body Balance with a qualified instructor;  Golf at Dymock Grange, including an hour’s lesson and 9 holes of golf; Jewellery making; Archery; Fitness at Halo Gym;  Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme; Team Sport; Film Focus (Sixth Form magazine, film club and Amnesty International); Creative cooking. Additionally, team sports and fixtures for Football, Rugby, Mixed Hockey, Netball and Rounders also take place on Wednesday afternoon and inter-house competitions run at the end of each half term.  Badminton, Squash and Weight training facilities are also available for use throughout the school day.   This programme has been specifically designed to have wide-ranging appeal and is part of our drive to increase healthy lifestyles and offer more opportunities for 16-19 year olds.
  • Friday 25 September: A Y12 Study skills workshop was arranged which  showed students how to cope with their considerable workload and how to understand and remember everything required. Students tried out practical solutions based on independent learning strategies. The workshop was well attended.
  • Thursday 22 October: Students organised a social evening at Ledbury Rugby Club and the theme was Halloween/sports. This was well attended and the money raised will be donated to charity.
  • Friday 23 October:  A day at Oakerwood Leisure was arranged for students as an ice breaker. Students took part in paintballing and quadbiking and competed in Houses.
  • Tuesday 17 November: The Sixth Form Open Evening was held, the event was well attended with students from JMHS and students from other schools.  Students will be invited to attend one-to-one interviews from 1-7 December with Mr Jones, Head of Sixth Form and parents are also welcome.   Appointments will be 15 minutes and held in the Sixth Form Centre.   Students will be invited to our Taster Day on Wednesday 20 January to experience a day in the life of a Sixth Former and letters will be sent out early in January.
  • Thursday 3 December : Parents evening was held in the Theatre.
  • Thursday 10 December: The Christmas Dinner Dance was held at The Chase Hotel in Ross on Wye. 
  • January 2010 As and A2 Exams took place.
  • Monday 1 February:  Sixth form  Taster Day took place.The day was planned for Y11 students to taste Sixth Form lessons and experience life as a sixth former for a day.  Year 11 sixth form interviews have taken place from Tuesday 3 February to Thursday 4 February.
  • July 2010:  an icebreaker trip has been arranged for Monday 19 July for Y11 students and sixth formers.  Students will shop in Oxford Street, have a meal at Planet Hollywood and see a West End show ‘Grease’ at the Piccadilly.   More details can be found on the letter at the foot of the webpage.
  • July 2011 – trip to South Africa:  An outstanding trip has been organised to South Africa for the fourth time and once again it is expected to be an amazing opportunity.  The proposed trip itinerary includes: hosting with a South African family; visiting and working on outreach projects; visiting and learning about important historic events such as the Battle of Rorkes’ Drift; going on safari to spot 'the big five'; staying at a beach resort and hoping to watch dolphins in the Indian Ocean. visiting and working at the adopted charities of JMHS.  Please see letter for more details on the webpage.
  • Friday 12 March:   Y12 students attended a Higher Education Fair organised by UCAS at the University of Worcester.   This was an ideal opportunity for students to find out more about universities they are considering and attend seminars which ran throughout the day.
