Performing Arts College
Pyramid Prom
On Monday 9th March JMHS hosted the Pyramid Prom in the Theatre. There were performances from each of the Primary Schools as well as two items from students here at JMHS. Soloists and ensembles performed a range of music and their performances were of a high quality.
Many of the students were performing in front of a large audience for the first time and they all managed to show confidence with their singing and playing and they all represented their schools really well.
The choirs of Ashperton, Eastnor and Much Marcle sang beautifully and Bosbury once again were represented by two percussion ensembles that were very visual as well as musical. Cradley and Ledbury’s Brass groups played some contrasting music and Ledbury’s Belle plate group also performed well.
Soloists from each school performed very musically and JMHS was represented by John Carter on Saxophone and Daisy Allen on Drum-kit who performed ‘Going Home’ by Kenny G and ‘Baker Street’ by Gerry Rafferty, both with a great sense of style. Also Ewan Onions and George Baker played and sang their own arrangement of ‘Stairway to Heaven’ by Led Zeppelin with their Guitars. The standard of their performance was high and they also performed with sensitivity and style.
A full-house audience appreciated the whole evening which finished with all Primary Schools singing ‘You are my brother’ all together for the Finale. JMHS students played the audience out with their own improvised Blues Band arrangement.
We look forward to next year’s Prom!
X Factor competition
On Wednesday 13th May John Masefield High School held it’s 2nd Annual X Factor Competition in the Theatre. The evening, organised by Year 10 students, showcased the wealth of talent from students in the school. Earlier heats had produced finalists from all year groups who performed solos and vocal groups. Staff at the School also entered into the spirit of the occasion and there were several memorable performances. Sixth form students took on the roles of the judges and they had a difficult task deciding upon the winners. The ‘Full House’ audience created a fantastic atmosphere for the evening and supported each act as they performed. The winner of the students competition was Daniel Wilson-Higgins who performed ‘House of the Rising Sun’, accompanying himself on the guitar. The Staff winners were Mrs Black and Mr Williams who recreated the Comic Relief version of ‘Islands in the Stream’ and they were supported by backing dancers and an appearance by Mr ‘Tom Jones’ Kontarines. Over £400 was raised on the night with £245 going to the School’s South Africa Trip.
Summer Music Concert
On Monday 22nd June at 6.30pm the Music Department staged an outdoor informal Concert for parents and friends in the area outside the Music block. Mr Bull had been worried by dark clouds and showers all day but decided to set-up for the evening outside regardless but as soon as the Concert Band started out came the sunshine!
There were many ensemble performances playing well-known pieces as well as compositions and arrangements. There were also soloists and the County Jazz Band making their debut performances. The standard of music performed was very high and the audience enjoyed all the performances. It was also a chance for year 11 and year 13 students to make their final performances before leaving JMHS.
We are looking forward to next year’s event which we hope will include a barbeque and refreshments on another warm summer evening.
Dance Showcase
This half term kicked off with a fantastic evening of Dance on the very first day back from half term. The showcase displayed the wonderful range of talents from all year groups and included some dazzling solos, duets and groups pieces. Many of the dances were choreographed by the students themselves and they ranged in styles from the lindy hop to modern and street dance. There was also a tribute to the late Michael Jackson in the junior dance club piece choreographed by ex-student Faye Brown. Highlights of the evening also included stunning solo dances from Holly Daniels, Matt Morris and Sophie Cockett. The evening was very well attended and the audience thoroughly enjoyed the show. Gemma Hinton, Jeanette McCulloch and Julie Ballantine did a fantastic job or organising the event.
Gifted and Talented Orchestra workshop day
30 Musicians attended a G&T Orchestra workshop day with Mr Bull in the Music Room on Wednesday 2nd December all day. They practised a selection of pieces including Christmas pieces and music from films and musicals. The standard of playing was very high by the end of the day and the students enjoyed themselves. Also there were opportunities to try each other’s instruments out which caused a lot of amusement! It was great to see students from Year 7 up to Year 13 working together and they now have repertoire of music for future performances
